Frequently Asked Questions
What is VHP sugar?
VHP stands for Very High Polarization. It is a raw cane sugar grade with polarization around 99.3% or higher — light brown in color, and the main bulk export grade shipped from Brazil, mostly destined for refineries abroad. See our ICUMSA sugar grades guide.
What is raw VHP sugar used for?
Primarily as refinery feedstock: refineries at the destination melt it and re-refine it into white refined grades. It is also used directly in some food manufacturing.
How does VHP differ from refined white sugar?
VHP retains a small amount of molasses, giving it a light brown tint. Refined white sugar (ICUMSA 45) has had virtually all molasses and impurities removed.
